Resumen: The need to preserve the vernacular knowledge for humankind has prompted the statement of diverse alternatives for protection of intellectual property by national, international, and non-government organizations. This has resulted in a wide gamut of schemes capable of being adopted, as well as a thorough discussion on the feasibility of its application. In this document some characteristics of vernacular knowledge are reviewed in order to identify its place in relation to the current system of protection of intellectual property. Thus, the first section discusses some definitions about traditional knowledge by establishing its relationship with the so-called western science and its methods for constructing knowledge. In the second section, an exploration is carried out about a more appropriate way of conceiving vernacular knowledge as 'collective knowledge' and the rights possessed by communities where this knowledge is generated. In the third section, this approach is contrasted with proposals which intend to make vernacular knowledge public in order to deny any possibility of protecting the rights indigenous communities have over that knowledge.
